The aim of the initial PRIME course is to prepare rural practitioners for their role as members of the integrated pre-hospital emergency response team.
The course has a predominately practical focus to consolidate skills such as intubation ACLS (level 5-7), intraosseous and IV cannulation, thoracocentesis, cricothyroidotomy, trauma and acute medical emergency management. The course includes principles of triage, major incident management, teamwork with ambulance and fire officers, patient extrication and transport considerations as they apply in the rural setting
The initial course is five days (40 hours) and is recognised for 40 CME points and Level 5 NZRC resuscitation. Rural practitioners are expected to complete an initial PRIME course within two years of committing to the PRIME system.
